"I chose not to respond" - Learnings from a true story
A few weeks ago, a stakeholder challenged my approach on a textile pilling dispute via an email. He even questioned my competence in front of several other stakeholders. His thesis was based on a flawed report shared by the textile manufacturer.
And I replied... nothing.
Why? If you look at my LinkedIn profile background picture, you'll read: "If it's not measured, it's just a theory" This is my professional motto, based on Socratic logic. I didn't put it there just for show.
My Approach: I had already sent samples for cotton staple length measurements, the only scientific test associated with the source of pilling. At the time, there were no cotton staple length test results received. So, instead of responding with speculations and confirmation bias, I chose to wait.
The Turning Point: When the lab results came in, everything became clear: - Short-staple cotton = Poor pilling resistance - Inconsistent textile batches - A weak, unsigned textile manufacturer's report
What I did next? I didn't gloat. I didn't escalate.
Instead, I offered 2 hours of free consultancy to the textile manufacturer's lab. To help them raise their standards. To help them and the industry to grow.
Because leadership at Diversey-A Solenis company, isn't about defending the brand. It's about raising the standards, with precision and integrity. It's strategic clarity under pressure.
In life, truth doesn't need noise. It needs evidence, timing and courage to keep control.
That's the Stoic play. And that's how everybody wins.
